OUR STORY

In 2011, activists from
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in South Minneapolis approached JRLC and told us their story of how they developed an interest in payday lending. Their work inspired JRLC to take a closer look at payday lending and to get involved in efforts to reform the practice in Minnesota. Members of our Board, assisted by staff, researched the issue in Minnesota and developed a detailed, interfaith position on the issue.

In the Spring of 2013, JRLC published our issue paper, Payday Lending in Minnesota (PDF), which has been approved by our four sponsors: the Islamic Center of Minnesota, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, the Minnesota Catholic Conference, and the Minnesota Council of Churches. As a result, JRLC kicked off our work and partnership with Holy Trinity at the July 2013 Day on the Grill and November 2013 Summit on Predatory Payday Lending in Minnesota.

During the 2014 Legislative Session, JRLC, along with Holy Trinity, took an active leadership position advocating for payday lending reform through the campaign Minnesotans for Fair Lending.
