Executive Director

Joint Religious Legislative Coalition: JRLC is a multifaith advocacy coalition in Minnesota, bringing together
people of diverse faiths to promote the common good of Minnesotans. JRLC is authorized and governed by
four Sponsoring Members: the Minnesota Catholic Conference, the Minnesota Council of Churches, the Jewish
Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, and the Islamic Center of Minnesota.
When JRLC was founded in 1971, it was the first multifaith public interest lobbying group in the United States.
JRLC now has an extensive body of public policy statements and continues to influence Minnesota in many
policy arenas. Currently, JRLC will have one full-time Executive Director and utilize contracted services as
necessary. We are a small but mighty organization with a history of bringing faiths together to improve our
state. JRLC recently completed a Strategic Planning process and will be bringing on a new Executive Director
to support the organization in the fulfilment of this plan.

policy advocacy for the common good.

Position Overview:

The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors and provide strong leadership, management and
support to all activities and operations of the organization. Initially this is envisioned to be the only full-time
position, working remotely (no central office), supporting the Board of Directors and an active Program
Committee, and other ad hoc work groups. There is the possibility of a part-time Administrative Associate and
engaging contracted service providers. Salary range $80,000 - $100,000 + compensation in lieu of benefits.

Key Responsibilities:

Advocacy and Lobbying
• Support the development of the annual legislative agenda and policy papers
• Oversee and implement lobbying and advocacy activities, including events and organizing individuals to
advocate for JRLC priority issues
• Maintain and expand relationships with legislators and appropriate state officials
• Work in partnership with the Sponsoring Members and other lobbying and advocacy organizations to
maximize efforts
• Maintain records of all lobbying and advocating activities and expenses and complete all state and
federal required filings
Network Maintenance and Development
• Support faith leaders, organizations and individual members, encouraging and supporting engagement
with JRLC and our activities
• Grow and diversify our base of organizations and members through individual and group outreach and
engagement activities
• Ensure member data is collected and utilized to maintain and grow our base
Organization Management
• Create and maintain remote office infrastructure to propel the work of the organization
• Establish annual organizational goals, objectives and work plans, and track results against these goals.
• Manage, as necessary, the Administrative Associate and contracts with consultants to ensure
successful implementation of activities and goals
• Provide support to the Board of Directors, Program Committee and work groups
Financial Oversight and Fundraising
• Prepare and submit an annual budget to the JRLC Board for approval each fiscal year
• Monitor organizational finances and reconcile financial statements from the fiscal sponsor monthly and
ensure that spending is consistent with the budget and approved grants and contracts
• Implement membership and individual donor contribution efforts
• Prospect potential foundations and write grants to fund projects
• Prepare and/or review grants and contracts and monitor and/or amend grants and contracts as needed.
• Oversee the preparation of the Form 990 and fulfill all other legal requirements
Engagement and Communication
• Effectively communicate with members to ensure continued engagement and full participation
• Provide regular and timely updates and information to all members, as well as meet 1:1 with members
as necessary
• Produce policy education and training programming and materials
• Oversee all messaging and communications to members and other audiences in order to effectively
build, support and implement JRLC initiatives
• Serve as the official spokesperson for JRLC, speak at public forums, prepare official press releases
and statements, submit opinion pieces, and provide advocacy-related social media content

Job Qualifications:
• High energy and passion for leading a multi-faith organization; previous experience working with
multifaith efforts preferred
• Proven experience in advocacy, education, policy, and lobbying efforts
• Experience organizing and working with a network of individuals and member organizations
• A self-motivated leader and manager able to work effectively without day-to-day oversight or direction
• Understanding and interest in managing the operations and process of a small non-profit organization
• Proven ability to build consensus and create shared agendas among diverse constituencies.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking skills
• Ability to work remotely as well as be present frequently in Minnesota for meetings
• Experience with MSOffice, database management, social networking, and other relevant tech tools
